Why It Matters

Why It Matters

Sport is not a luxury. It is an essential right for every child.

In Hong Kong, the case for sport as a tool for social change is urgent. Too many children and young people are under pressure, missing out on regular physical activity, and navigating daily experiences that affect confidence, wellbeing, connection and opportunity. For those already facing marginalisation or exclusion, the impact can be even greater.

The challenge is clear

  • Over 90% of children and young people in Hong Kong are not getting enough physical activity.
  • These pressures begin as young as six years old.
  • By secondary school, nearly two-thirds of young people report feeling overwhelmed by academic stress.
  • More than 40% show signs of emotional strain.
  • For children from low-income families, ethnic minority communities and those with special educational needs, these challenges can be compounded further.
However, when young people are given access to well-crafted sports-based programmes, the results can be both remarkable and measurable. Sport can create safe spaces, stronger relationships, better routines, improved confidence and a deeper sense of belonging. It can help children and young people feel not only more active, but more hopeful about themselves and their future.

That is why Laureus Sport for Good Hong Kong exists: to help turn sport into a practical tool for resilience, inclusion, wellbeing and opportunity.
